SOLARCOLOR Morpho transforms solar modules into design objects.

Goldene Solarfassade mit SOLARCOLOR Morpho von Megasol Energie AG

The SOLARCOLOR Morpho solar modules from Megasol open up new possibilities for sustainable architecture. With an innovative surface coating inspired by nature, the SOLARCOLOR Morpho solar modules combine maximum efficiency with aesthetic design.

A butterfly as a model

The bright blue Morpho butterfly, or more precisely the structure of its wings, has inspired the idea of the new coloring of solar modules. The intense color of the butterfly wings is not created by pigments, but by a special lamellar structure. This structure interacts with certain light waves and reflects them. This offers two important advantages for industrial implementation: the intense coloring and the high light transmission.

As part of the collaboration between Fraunhofer ISE and Megasol, it was possible to transfer this three-dimensional lamellar structure to PV modules over a large area. This coating ensures a high color saturation. By also changing the distances between the lamellae, other colors can be created in a targeted manner.

Megasol combines performance and color

Since 2023, Megasol has been offering the colored PV modules produced using the new process under the name SOLARCOLOR Morpho. This process enables intense color options without sacrificing high energy efficiency.

The solar modules receive a coating that ensures the desired color impression with targeted light refraction. At the same time, most of the light can reach the surface of the solar cell unhindered and generate energy there. Thanks to this innovative technology, a SOLARCOLOR Morpho solar module is up to 94 percent more efficient than a conventional black solar module. This enables seamless integration of PV modules into architecturally sophisticated designs without compromising on energy efficiency.

SOLARCOLOR Morpho offers a wide range of standard colors, including gold, silver, bronze, red, green, moss green, navy blue, violet, yellow and orange. In addition, individual project colors can be developed at the customer's request to allow even more precise customisation. Furthermore, the glass surface of the modules can be adapted so that the color intensity appears glossy, shimmering or matt, as desired.

The SOLARCOLOR Morpho solar module impresses with its color and performance properties. It is ideal for all those who expect more from a solar façade than just efficient, sustainable energy generation. They also have high expectations in terms of individual design and the aesthetic appeal of the building.

Colored solar modules: efficient design objects

The development of the SOLARCOLOR Classic technology for the production of colored solar modules was an important innovation on the part of Megasol for a generally expanded use of solar modules. With them, the implementation of photovoltaics as a structural and design element of the building envelope was also better possible from the point of view of aesthetic design. In the colored PV modules from Megasol with SOLARCOLOR Classic technology, color pigments are used for the cover glass. They reflect a different proportion of the light depending on the color. The non-reflected light generates energy. The color intensity influences the performance of the modules.

This approach has been further perfected with SOLARCOLOR Morpho technology: thanks to more intense colors and higher performance, it opens up new opportunities for seamlessly and functionally integrating photovoltaics into sophisticated architecture. One example of this is the extraordinary apartment building in Schlieren, which simply glows with its golden SOLARCOLOR Morpho facade.
